What is Pilates?
Pilates is a fitness program created by Joseph Pilates. It is a great way for older adults to build and maintain their strength as Pilates improves posture, balance, stability and flexibility, all without being too taxing on the joints or muscles.
The exercises can also reduce the symptoms of later-in-life ailments, such as arthritis and osteoporosis, and can relieve back and joint pain too.
Done regularly Pilate improves the body’s core strength, flexibility, balance, and posture.
Pilates is suitable for all levels—from the beginner to the advanced student. In fact, not only is Pilates good for just about anyone, the exercises can be modified to accommodate a variety of conditions.
So how do I Start ?

Choose your type of Pilates class.
Pilates for the over 50’s isn’t restricted to just senior classes. You can take any type of Pilates class you wish to take. It just depends on your level of fitness, experience and what you are looking to achieve.
If you haven’t done Pilates before I strongly recommend you start with Pilates for Beginners (mat classes) before progressing on to Intermediate Pilates, Pilates on the Ball, Classic Pilates or YoPi!
Mat classes go through a series of exercises that apply the principles of Pilates… alignment, breathing and core control. The exercises included involve standing, kneeling, sitting and lying on the mat. The exercises (and classes) progress in difficulty from the basic fundamentals to challenging workouts.
Ball classes are becoming increasingly popular. They are absolutely ideal for strengthening the core as even just sitting on a ball requires core control and correct posture and any exercise we do on the ball requires balance. Balls open up a whole new repertoire of exercise options and add an extra challenge to mat work exercises, if you don’t get it right you fall off the ball!
Standing & Chair Pilates for Seniors
These classes are suitable for those with restricted mobility and allow you to safely practice Pilates even if you can’t kneel down or sit on the floor.
Standing & Chair Pilates classes are an adaption of Pilates for the more elderly adult or those with mobility restrictions. Whilst similar to Pilates, the authenticity of the basic Pilates is lessened as the exercises themselves are modified for use standing or with a chair.
Many of the classes on this site combine some yoga style stretches with Pilates exercises. All of classes on the site are low impact and improve flexibility and balance.
